On cooking

Eversince I got here and trying to be a good housewife that i am, i’ve been incharge of the cooking (except for weekends or when Jason feels like cooking). I don’t really know any recipe and am just armed with my basic knowledge of cooking and taste. If i needed a special dish, i just go to my all reliable laptop and visit Mr. Google. But for most of the time, i just go by my instincts. I admit the first few times, i’ve been a little rusty since the last time i’ve cooked a decent meal was when I was in high school. And so i’ve had my share of charcoal looking foods, burnt cooking utensils, smoke filled room, etc. But now, having practised every day and every night, i must say i have improved. I can now add a few dishes to my resume other than fried foods and perfect rice (thanks to my rice cooker…lolz).
My specialty is… anything goes. I call all my cooking anything goes because most of the time i do experimental dishes and just throw in what ever i have from my refrigerator. Sometimes i do a Fish adobo version, fried vegies with egg, my version of a burger, soy fish with vegies and now i just did my attempt on a chop suey – beef, fish, sayote, tomato, brocoli, some spices – a dash or oregano leaves, rosemary and dried basil leaves, and what made it mine is that i put a spoon full of peanut butter with peanut chunks. Somehow i have a knack on how things will taste when combined with such and such.
And mind you guys, my husband most often than not, loves my cooking now more than ever. Please take note that he is one picky guy when it comes to food and has better taste buds than mine, so for me, it’s a major accomplishment to have his approval. 😀

Here’s our dinner for tonight: Chopsuey ala JL
Ingredients:
1 clove garlic minced
1/2 onion diced
1/4 beef cubed
1 fish fillet
1 sayote thinly sliced
3 cherry tomatoes
2 brocolli
pinch of dried oregano leaves
1/2 tsp salt
pinch of pepper
1 tbsp flour/corn starch
1 tbsp peanut butter with peanut chunks
1 cup water
1/2 tbsp sugar

Sautee garlic and onion. Season beef and fish with pepper and sault then toss in beef to the pan, cook until tender. Add fish fillet, cook for 5 mins. Then add the vegetables – brocolli, sayote and tomatoes. add 1/4 cup of water. Cover the pan and cook for 5 mins or until the water has evaporated. Remove the vegetables, fish and beef from the pan. On a small bowl, mix 1/2 cup water with the flour, pepper, salt and sugar.  Cook this mixture for 5 mins while adding the remaining water. Add in the peanut butter. Stir occasionally. You may add additional salt depending on your taste. Once cooked, pour over the vegies, meat and fish. Serve while hot. yum yum!
