Darth Vader cupcake

I just had another cupcake order for a friend’s birthday. The design request was starwars Darth Vader. So with this, i decided to use a different medium.

This is the first time that I dabbled on a fondant. I just got my pre-made fondant from a cake store in Wanchai called I Love Cake. At the time when I visited their store, they are already out of stock on the black fondant, so I had to buy an extra black colouring. Coloring and Kneading the fondant was a bit tricky, the consistency of the fondant that I got is a bit sticky, so I had to add some more icing sugar to get the perfect texture and consistency.  I must say, this is a good workout for developing arm muscles.

I started working at about 3pm on a Saturday.

First, I had to find a Darth Vader photo reference, looking around the internet, I found this –

Then I retraced it for a cleaner view, printed it, cut it out, then covered it in a clean “Cling Wrap” plastic, and this is our template for the main base/head.

Ofcourse, i have my eager little helper with me, here, she’s flattening the fondant.

Don’t worry guys, her hands are really clean, I made her wash twice 😛 I just have to do something with those hair next time and make it in a ponytail or have her wear a hair net or something.

Janna helped also in cutting out the head from this black fondant and she did a great job.

Too bad I didn’t have a photo of the cut-out of the heads, and the white details because my hands are so sticky, I cannot hold the camera 😛

My husband helped me with adding the details on the head, and we worked until 2 am. Each are manually done, I didn’t have any cookie template cutter. Maybe I should invest on those too. Brings back memories of our college days when we both would spend hours and hours working on our school plates and projects 😛 (feeling college again) Also, sticking those little white details to the black base requires a bag of patience, it is quite hard to hold the small pieces without breaking it, and i need to wet it first so it would stick in the base (but had to be very careful not to wet it too much or it will melt).

Anyway, so here are the final products – I made 2 flavours for the cupcake base, chocolate and dalandan, but the frosting is chocolate flavoured.
