Enjoying Karaoke even without magic sing mic

We all know that filipinos love to sing whether or not we are armed with a good voice. It is just in our DNA. I remember when I was still young/er, when Magic Sing hasn’t been invented yet, any occassion in my family is not complete without a karaoke session. It is already a part of our tradition, which started with the minus one, where we will just be accompanied by instrumental music from a cassette tape, lyrics will be provided in a printed format. We later on upgraded to the good ol’ betamax, then VHS tapes, which later on evolved to CDs and DVDs. We’ll have to go through each of the song lineup, otherwise, wait for the rewind or fast forward function to finish in order to get to your favourite song, or change the whole disc entirely with a new set of album or compilation. Oh, those good old days. And also those annoying days when you can hear your neighbour until 1am singing to their hearts content even when out of tune the all time favourite – “My way”.

Because of those limited selections, I was able to learn even the songs older than my grandma!

Then came the magic sing – a heaven sent for all Filipinos who love to sing. Everything is as easy as just a touch of a button right in your palm. All songs accessible right away, old or new, in one single small disc!

Though I must confess, until now, I do not own one. All my magic sing experiences were made possible by borrowing from friends and relatives. Here in HK, all my friends have a magic sing mic in their homes, ours is the only one that doesn’t. Why? Because it is expensive, that’s why. I guess I am just not yet at that point where I would want to sing as often as I want on a microphone. It is best enjoyed with friends and family, which I do not have the luxury of inviting/hosting in our cute little humble home, just because I thought the space isn’t enough. Although i miss my karaoke days withy family terribly nowadays.

But now… I don’t think I have to purchase myself a magic sing! Thanks to a friend, I discovered an alternative way to enjoy Karaoke without the magic sing mic, just an ordinary mic will do, and an ipad or a desktop with internet connection and a good speaker.

How so? Via Youtube of course!
Now you can enjoy even the most recent songs that you want. Just search the song name followed by the word Karaoke, and walla… a wide selection to choose from.

Here’s a trick I learned from a friend, you can even use your smart phone, just connect it to a speaker using this adaptor/extension to your speaker and you are ready to go.
